Sohar Aluminium promotes environmental sustainability by planting over 10,000 trees in Musandam Governorate

Wagulf – Muscat

Complementing its constant efforts towards preserving the environment and its sustainable natural resources, Sohar Aluminium Company (SA) organised a voluntary campaign, in cooperation with the Environment Department in Musandam Governorate, to plant 10,100 wild native trees in the Khor Al Najd in the Wilayat of Khasab. This campaign stemmed from the national initiative for the plantation of 10 million trees, which was launched by the Environment Authority in January 2020. This campaign comes within an integrated project launched by the Company about 6 months ago, which included levelling and fencing the site as well as developing the irrigation system to water the trees planted during the campaign.

This project reflects Sohar Aluminium’s contribution and support to the efforts of the government of the Sultanate of Oman to achieve Zero Neutrality by 2050. Likewise, it proves the Company’s social responsibility as the tree planting campaign is aimed to increase the green spaces in rural natural areas, combat desertification, and raise public awareness about the importance of preserving the environment in the Sultanate of Oman. In addition to nurturing the environment, planting various plant species brings economic benefits to society and serves to maintain the ecosystem balance as an essential environmental component for many natural organisms.

Furthermore, through this campaign, Sohar Aluminium seeks to support the efforts and partnership between various government and private bodies with regards to preserving the environment and achieving environmental sustainability.

The campaign included planting different types of wild trees, such as Al Ghaf, and Sidr, trees, due to their suitability to the local natural environments and climates. The trees were planted over an area covering around 84,500 sqm, with the support of more than 450 participants from the company’s employees and some government entities in Musandam Governorate. School students and a group of volunteers from local associations and community members in the Governorate took part in the campaign too.

It is worth noting that the National Campaign for the Plantation of 10 million trees aims to urge community participation in preserving wild plants and its diversity by planting trees over a period of ten years from 2020 to 2030 with one million trees annually. The Campaign’s focus has been on well-known wild trees in the Sultanate of Oman, including Al Ghaf, Al Samar, Sidr, Shua, Al Alal and others, as these are the most suited to Oman’s environment and climate.
